The Drosophila melanogaster gurken (gene symbol: grk, encoded by CG17610) gene has been identified by Neuman-Silberberg and Schupbach (1993). The encoding protein exists in a membrane and a secreted form and is a Drosophila melanogaster homolog of mammalian TGF-alpha.
gurken participates in a signaling process that occurs between the germline and the somatic cells (follicle cells) of the ovary (Neuman-Silberberg and Schupbach, 1996). gurken serves as a spatially restricted ligand that asymmetrically activates its receptor, the Drosophila melanogaster homolog of the EGF receptor, torpedo
