[apolipoprotein L9a] Apol9a is 97 % identical with Apol9b. Like Apol9b, Apol9a inhibits replication of Theiler’s murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV). Apol9a, like Apol9b, is strongly expressed in mouse liver and, to a lesser extent, in pancreas, adipose tissue and intestine. Its expression is increased by type 1 interferon and viral infection. ApoL9a interacts with cellular prohibitin 1 (Phb1) and prohibitin 2 (Phb2) and this interaction might contribute to its antiviral activity (Kreit et al, 2015).
