[Ankyrin repeat domains]
also abbr. ANK domain. Ankyrins were discovered originally as components of the membranes of erythrocytes. Apart from erythroid tissue, Ankyrin-1 is expressed also in neural (Lambert et al, 1990; Lambert and Bennett, 1993; Gallagher et al, 1992; Birkenmeier et al, 1993; Kordeli and Bennett, 1991; Kordeli et al, 1990) and skeletal muscle (Birkenmeier et al, 1993) tissue. In humans, ankyrins are encoded by three related genes, designated ankyrin-1 (erythrocyte ankyrin, ANKR) (Lambert et al, 1990; Lux et al, 1990), ankyrin-2 (brain ankyrin, ANKB) (Otto et al, 1991), and ankyrin-3 (general ankyrin, ANKG) (Kordeli et al, 1995). A large variety of isoforms is generated by developmentally regulated, tissue-specific posttranscriptional processing.
