This factor, known also as MAT [Monocyto-Angiotropin, monocyte-derived angiogenic substance], can be isolated from activated peripheral blood monocytes and macrophages (Höckel et al, 1987, 1988; Höckel and Burke, 1989).
Angiotropin is a 4.5 kDa polyribonucleoprotein consisting of a peptide chain of 38 amino acids and a ribonucleic acid of 43 bases. In several bioassays angiotropin is found to be one of several very powerful angiogenesis factors and a strong chemoattractant (see also: Chemotaxis) for endothelial cells, the proliferation of which it does not stimulate.
