Angiostatin was observed initially as an angiogenesis inhibitor in serum and urine of mice bearing a Lewis lung carcinoma (3LL cells). Angiostatin has been identified as an 38 kDa internal fragment of plasminogen composed of the first four kringle domains of plasminogen (O'Reilly et al, 1996). This protein is called also Angiostatin K1-4 (also referred to as plasminogen kringles 1-4, abbr. PK1-4 or PlgK1-4.
It has been observed that plasminogen, which exists naturally in plasma as two glycoforms yields distinct angiostatins, which have been termed AST-1 [
