a protein encoded in the genome of human adenoviruses. The gene encoding this protein is expressed early during viral replication cycle and possesses a variety of functions in the transformation of primary rodent cells and gene transcription. The protein facilitates efficient virus replication by protecting cells against premature cell death by apoptosis induced by another viral protein, E1A. Expression of the viral protein also prevents apoptosis induced by various external stimuli, including TNF-alpha and APO-1.
