[apoptosis-inducing TAF9-like domain 1] This gene has been identified by Krona et al (2004). Two alternatively spliced mRNAs encode proteins of 138 and 99 amino acids. Low expressio0n has been observed in neuroblastomas and some other cancers. Expression of APITD1 in neuroblastoma cells reduces cell growth considerably, suggesting that the gene may play a role in cell death pathways.
The protein has been shown to be CENP-S [centromeric protein S], a component of the centromeric nucleosome-associated protein complex, disruptions of which cause errors of chromosome alignment and segregation that preclude cell survival (Foltz et al, 2006).
