[Activity-regulated Inhibitor of Death genes] This term has been coined by Zhang et al (2009) for a group of unrelated genes the expression of which in neurons is dependent on nuclear calcium signaling. The nuclear calcium-regulated gene pool contains a genomic program that mediates synaptic activity-induced, acquired neuroprotection. The core set of neuroprotective genes consists of 9 principal components and includes ATF-3 [Activating transcription factor-3], BTG2, gadd45-beta, gadd45-gamma, Inhibin-beta-A, Interferon activated gene 202B, NPAS4 [neuronal PAS domain protein 4], NR4A1, and SERPINB2, which strongly promote survival of cultured hippocampal neurons
