The AA4 antigen, identified originally by McKearn et al (1985) by a monoclonal antibody termed AA4.1 recognizing the antigen on cells of the myeloid and lymphoid lineage, is a type 1 glycosylated transmembrane protein containing a C-type lectin-like domain (Nepomuceno et al, 1997), followed by a cysteine-rich domain comprising five EGF-like repeats. O-glycosylation is important in the stable cell surface expression of the antigen (Park and Tenner, 2003).
