8D9

8D9 is a monoclonal antibody that binds to axons in the chicken nervous system (Lemmon and McLoon, 1986). The antigen is a potent substrate for neurite extension. Neurons rapidly attach to the antigen, whereas astroglial cells, oligodendroglial cells, and fibroblast-like cells do not (Lagenaur and Lemmon, 1987).

The antibody recognizes an axon-associated cell adhesion molecule, which is being referred to also as L1/8D9. The protein is immunologically related to L1 (Lemmon and McLoon, 1986), NILE (Bock et al, 1985), and NgCAM (Friedlander et al, 1986), and is thought to represent the chicken homolog of NgCAM and G4.
