abbr. E-5'Nu. The systematic name for this enzyme is 5'-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase. It is known also as ecto-5'-nucleotidase. The enzyme removes the phosphate from from a 5'-ribonucleotide, generating a ribonucleoside. Thus, the enzyme is responsible for the generation of adenosine from AMP (Drummond and Yamamoto, (1971); Gulland and Jackson, (1938); Heppel and Hilmoe (1951).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD73.
