This gene of the silkworm Bombyx mori encodes a protein of 30 kDa. 30K proteins constitute a group of structurally related proteins, which accumulate in a stage-dependent fashion in the larval hemolymph of the silkworm, Bombyx mori (Mori et al, 1991; Sakai et al, 1988) (see also: 30Kc19). It has been reported that hemolymph protects insect cells (Rhee et al, 2002) and human cells (Choi et al, 2002) against cell death by apoptosis. Kim et al (2004) have reported that the 30K protein encoded by 30Kc6 inhibits virus- or chemical-induced apoptosis in human cells as well as insect cells and that this may constitute the major anti-apoptotic
