This bioactive peptide fragment (see also: cryptides) is derived from WISP-2 [Wnt-1 induced secreted protein-2; Wnt1-inducible signaling pathway protein-2], a member of the CCN family of secreted cysteine-rich growth regulators (Karagiannis and Popel, 2007). Wispostatin-2 [TAWGPCSTTCGLGMATRV] corresponds to WISP-2(199-216) (residues 199-216 of the WISP-2 gene) (Karagiannis and Popel, 2008). The primary structure of this peptide is similar to the thrombospondin type 1 domains found in thrombospondin-1, thrombospondin-2, the metalloproteinases ADAMTS1 and ADAMTS8. The
