[wax cell]
Wax cells constitute an insect cell type found in the hemolymph of aphid species. They may have the same embryonic origin as circulating hemocytes but are not thought to represent circulating hemocytes (Hollande, 1911). These cells do not appear to ingest foreign material (Schmitz A et al, 2012) but they play a role in immunity in that they produce wax that sticks to external aggressors (Outreman et al, 2001). The cells contain large lipid vesicles which are thought to contain alarm pheromones emitted by attacked aphids (Bowers et al, 1972).
