[viral chemokine inhibitor] The gene encoding vCCI is identical with the 35K virulence gene in variola virus and cowpox viruses (see: M-T1). Genes with strongly conserved sequences are observed also in vaccinia virus, Variola (G5R), and Shope fibroma virus, and monkey poxvirus (see: MPV vCCI). Bryant et al (2003) have referred to the protein as vCKBP-2 [viral chemokine binding protein-2].
The gene encodes a secreted soluble protein which does not display any sequence homology with known proteins, including known cellular receptors of chemokines.
