[tropomyosin-related kinase] [pronounced "track"] The trk gene encodes a transmembrane protein of 140 kDa with an intracellular domain functioning as a tyrosine-specific protein kinase. The human gene maps to chromosome 1q23-1q24. trk is expressed preferentially in neuronal tissues. Transforming alleles of the trk gene were isolated originally as Oncogene genes from human colon and thyroid carcinomas.
The transforming trk oncogene is generated by fusion of the gene encoding non-muscle tropomyosin and other DNA sequences located 5'to the trk locus with the receptor-like kinase domain of trk (hence its name: tropomyosin receptor kinase) (Reinach and MacLeod, 1986). A homolog of trk from
