This term has been used to refer to the functional equivalent of mammalian platelets in birds and some other non-mammalian vertebrates (Dieterlen-Lièvre F, 1988; see also: Claver and Quaglia, 2009). It should be noted, however, that, unlike platelets, thromboblasts are nucleated true cells and their development differs from those in mammalians.
