Taste bud cells (also: taste cells; taste receptor cells, gustatory cells, gustatory sensory cells) are specialized polarized neuroepithelial cells that sense and transmit information regarding the composition of food (Breslin and Huang, 2006; Chaudhari and Roper, 2010; Yoshida and Ninomiya, 2010). Distinct morphological types have been described. For type 1 taste bud cells or type 1 gustatory cells see: dark cells. For type 2 taste bud cells see: light cells. For type 3 gustatory cells see: type 3 taste bud cells.
