Tachylectins are a group of five lectins from circulating hemocytes and hemolymph plasma of the Japanese horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus (Kawabata and Iwanaga, 1999; Gokudan et al, 1999). These factors play a role in innate immunity by being able to recognize various structures on invading pathogens (Kawabata and Tsuda, 2002).
Tachylectin-1 interacts with Gram-negative bacteria probably through 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate, one of the constituents of lipopolysaccharides. Tachylectin-1 also binds to polysaccharides such as agarose and dextran with broad specificity.
Tachylectin-2 , which is identical with Lectin L10c
