Styelins are a family of phenylalanine-rich broad spectrum antimicrobial peptides. They are abundant in the hemocytes of the solitary tunicate Styela clava and comprise between 10 and 20% of the total cellular protein of eosinophilic granulocytes (Menzel et al, 2002).
Styelin A (GXFGKAFXSVSNFAKKHKTA) and Styelin B (GXFGPAFHSVSNFAKKHKTA) have been identified by Lee et al (1997). These two peptides are active against Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacterial human pathogens and also kill marine bacteria, Psychrobacter immobilis and Planococcus citreus.
