This is a general term for abnormally shaped erythrocytes (see also: discocytes). The cells are not biconcave but globular and stain much more intensely than normal red blood cells, showing no central zone of pallor. Also, these cells are often smaller than normal erythrocytes (Crosby et al, 1952; Merlob et al, 1986; Zipusky et al, 1979).
Elevated numbers of spherocytes are seen in cases of hemolytic anemias. Hereditary spherocytosis can be caused by mutations in a variety of erythrocyte proteins, including band 3 protein (CD233) (Eber and Lux, 2004).
