The terms senescence or replicative senescence (or replicative aging; sometimes also named chronic senescence) pertain to limits in the proliferative capacity of cells. Cells that show this phenomenon are called senescent cells.
Senescence occurs in vivo with advancing age, as well as in cell culture and is thought to be the result of both telomere erosion and increasing oxidative damage (Cristofalo et al, 2004). This kind of senescence associated with age is also called telomere-dependent replicative senescence.
