[sclerocyte]
This specialized secretory cell type is found in certain calcareous sponges and is involved in the formation of calcium carbonate skeletal elements (spicules) (Ledger, 1975; Ledger and Jones, 1977). For key components in biomineralization process of calcareous sponges see also: Voigt et al (2014).
Sclerocytes also take up silicic acid (Schröder et al, 2004) and deposit it in special organelles called the silicasome (Schröder et al, 2004). Natalio et al (2014) have studied primary sponge cell culture from Suberites domuncula primmorphs as an in vitro model of spiculogenesis, They have detected ferritin and have suggested that iron ions are used by sponge cells for efficient silica uptake and silicasome formation and thus contribute indirectly to spiculogenesi.
