Rps3a or S3a is a structural component of the 40S ribosome (40S ribosomal protein S3a). The human gene has been cloned by Metspalu et al (1992) (for gene structure see also: Yoshihama et al, 2002). The rat ribosomal protein differs from a variant, called S3b by the presence of 12 carboxyterminal amino acid residues. Rat S3a is identical to the product of the rat Fte-1 gene, which encodes a protein known as fos transformation effector (also:v-fos transformation effector protein 1) (Kho et al, 1992; Chan et al, 1996).
