This term relates to the regulation of the expression of cytokine receptors. It essentially means that the expression of a particular cytokine receptor on the cell surface is either stimulated or inhibited by another cytokine, thus allowing the effective control of biological activities of cytokines by other cytokines, growth factors, or other compounds.
These activities on receptor expression and/or function may be concentration-dependent with cytokines exerting differential effects on other cytokine receptors, depending on receptor occupancy.
