this collective term refers to the entire set of proteins that are actually detected in a given cell type or tissue (see also: gene expression). Note that this term does not include those proteins that a cell or tissue could make because the cells contain the genes encoding such proteins, i.e., proteome analysis provides a snapshot of gene activity at the time of analysis; different sets of proteins may be seen under different circumstances.
