the approved gene symbol is PODXL [podocalyxin-like]. The protein is known also as PCLP [podocalyxin-like protein] or PCLP1 [podocalyxin-like protein 1]. The human gene has been cloned by Kershaw et al (1997). The gene structure, which resembles that of CD34, has been reported by Li J et al (2011). Podocalyxin transcripts are expressed in various tissues, with highest expression in kidney, pancreas, and heart. Immunofluorescence of human kidney sections shows intense vascular endothelial cell and glomerular staining (Kershaw et al, 1997).
