This term (short for osteal tissue macrophages or osteal macrophages) has been coined by Chang et al (2008) for resident macrophages found in the endosteum and periosteum, constituting approximately one-sixth of the total cells within calvarial osteal tissues. This cell population resides within, and is distributed throughout, osteal tissues and is an integral component of mouse and human osteal tissues (for overview see also: Sinder et al, 2015).
