This antimicrobial peptide of 6.7 kDa has been isolated from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) skin secretions (Fernandez et al, 2003).
The first 13 residues of the protein have been shown to be identical with those of the non-histone chromosomal protein H6 from rainbow trout, suggesting that oncorhyncin-3 is likely to be a cleavage product of the 66 amino acid long non-histone chromosomal protein H6 (Watson et al, 1979).
The purified peptide exhibits potent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, with minimal inhibitory concentrations in the submicromolar range. For other proteins/peptides with functions in innate immunity
