this term pertains to the selective organelle-specific autophagy process by which components of the nucleus are sequestered and removed in yeast cells through a pathway specifically requiring receptor ATG39. Cells lacking ATG39 exhibit abnormal morphology in the nucleus and die earlier than wild-type cells during prolonged nitrogen starvation (Mochida et al, 2015). Phenomena that may represent nucleophagy have been reported in several organisms including mammals. Nucleophagy can present itself as macronucleophagy, which involves the sequestration of nucleus-derived material into autophagosomes and subsequent fusion with the vacuole or lysosomes (Park et al, 2009).
