This term has been coined by Gelman and Fricker (2010) and is a collective term for a variety of bioactive peptides that are produced possibly on demand, from a variety of cytosolic, mitochondrial, nuclear, lysosomal, or membrane proteins that are not prohormones and are known mainly for bioactivities unrelated to neurotransmission and/or neuromodulation. Many of the peptides identified so far represent the N- or C-terminus of the protein, rather than internal fragments, raising the possibility that they are formed by selective processing rather than protein degradation. The majority of these peptides are derived from cystosolic proteins, and the remainder are mitochondrial, nuclear, lysosomal, or membrane proteins.
