Note: the term basket cells is used also for other cell types. Neuronal basket cells (basket neurons, basket interneurons) are specialized neurons (interneurons) in the neocortex first described by Ramon y Cajal (Ramon y Cajal, 1911) and named after their distinct axonal arborizations on and around somata of target neurons (Somogyi et al, 1983; Jones and Hendry, 1984; Casteyon et al, 2001).
