The Drosophila melanogaster necrotic gene has been identified originally as a mutant phenotype by Heitzler et al (1993). Amorphic mutations of necrotic are either pharate adult lethal, or die within 24 hr of eclosion. The adult flies look relatively normal at eclosion but, after a few hours, develop brown patches and cellular necrosis (Heitzler et al, 1993; Green et al, 2000).
The Necrotic protein, encoded by gene CG1857 (symbol: nec), consists of a serpin core, which has sequence homology with alpha-1-antitrypsin
