This general term refers to any kind of locally produced, secreted protein that forms spatial and/or temporal gradients in developing tissues. Morphogens provide inductive signals that act over long distances, provide cells with positional information, and control growth and patterning during embryonic/tissue development (for overview see: Briscoe and Small, 2015; Rogers and Schier, 2011; Sagner and Briscoe, 2017).
