[monoblast, monoblastic]
Monoblasts are the first morphologically identifiable cells in a succession of cell types developing into monocytes (see also: hematopoiesis). Monoblasts are the first committed cells in a series of developmental steps leading to the development of monocytes from pluripotent stem cells. This cell type is virtually identical in morphology to myeloblasts that are precursors of granulocytes. Monoblasts develop into promonocytes, which then develop into mature monocytes (for overview see also: Mosser and Edwards, 2008).
