approved gene symbol: MAS1; abbr. sometimes MasR [mas receptor]. Mas is a proto-oncogene identified in vivo by its tumorigenic properties (Young et al, 1986; Rabin et al, 1987). Mas encodes a protein with seven hydrophobic transmembrane domains, identified as a G-protein-coupled receptor with an unknown ligand (Zohn et al, 1998). Mas is highly expressed in several tissues including heart, kidney, brain and CNS, and vasculature (Hanley et al, 1990; Martin et al, 1992; Chou et al, 2013; Sukumaran et al, 2012; Ferrario and Varagic, 2010).
