Lymphoblasts are the first morphologically identifiable and most immature cells in a succession of cell types developing into lymphocytes (see also: hematopoiesis). These cells can divide 2-3 times to form prolymphocytes, which then mature into B-cells in the bone marrow or T-lymphocytes in the thymus.
The term lymphoblastoid cells is used frequently in the sense of "resembling lymphoblasts" but is used also to refer to immortalized and/or transformed lymphoblasts (see also: lymphoid cells).
