[lipofibroblast]
Lipofibroblasts are located in the alveolar interstitium and are recognizable by their characteristic lipid droplets. These cells line the basal side of type 2 pneumocytes (Marin et al, 1982). The cells are being referred to also as lipid interstitial cells or alveolar interstitial fibroblasts and are found also in the human lung (Rehan et al, 2006).
Koumas et al (2003) have shown that only Thy1 [thymus cell antigen 1] negative, but not Thy1 [thymus cell antigen 1] positive subsets of fibroblasts differentiate to lipofibroblasts. Lipofibroblasts have characteristics of myofibroblasts
