[ligamentocyte]
Ligamentocytes are a special type of fibroblasts in dense connective tissues such as ligaments (Benjamin and Ralphs, 2000). In these locations these cells, similar to tendon cells, are highly organized and align in rows between parallel thick fibers, mainly consisting of type 1 collagen, that provide the major resistance to tensile forces (Amiel et al, 1984; Canty et al, 2004). Sugimoto Y et al (2013) have reported that these cells arise from a unique multipotent cell population that is characterised by the expression of SOX9 and SCX [scleraxis] and gives rise to ligamentocytes, tenocytes, and chondrocytes for the establishment of the chondro-tendinous/ligamentous junction.
