[Lethal giant larvae]; also: l(2)gl [lethal (2) giant larvae]. This Drosophila melanogaster protein, encoded by gene CG2671, has been identified originally as a tumor suppressor protein (Mechler et al, 1985). Lgl is also a regulator of epithelial cell polarity, a function that involves the interaction with a number of proteins (Yamanaka et al, 2003; Plant et al, 2003; Betschinger et al, 2003). Mutation of lgl causes loss of apicobasal polarity and uncontrolled proliferation in imaginal discs (Mechler et al, 1985, Bilder et al, 2000; Agrawal et al, 1995), leading to neoplastic tumor formation. Ohshiro et al (2000) have demonstrated that lgl is essential for asymmetric cortical localization of all basal determinants in mitotic neuroblasts
