abbr. H cells; often just horizontals. Horizontal cells are specialized neurons found in the retina. Their processes are arranged parallel to the surface of the retina. These cells are involved in visual information processing by rod cells and cone cells within the retina. They create negative feedback pathways to cone cells and connect to bipolar cells for further signal processing (Kamermans and Spekreijse, 1999). Each horizontal cell receives excitatory inputs from many cone cells (Lee et al, 1999). Subtypes of horizontal cells receive information from subtypes of cone cells (Dacey et al, 1996).
