[Ancylostoma caninum platelet inhibitor] abbr. HPI. This protein of approximately 15 kDa isolated from soluble protein extracts of adult Ancylostoma caninum hookworms has been identified by Chadderdon RC, Cappello (1999). The protein blocks platelet aggregation in response to a variety of agonists and also prevents adhesion of resting platelets to immobilized fibrinogen and collagen. The protein acts through cell surface integrins CD41 / CD61 and CD49b / CD49a on platelets, which function as the platelet receptors for fibrinogen and collagen, respectively.
