[hepatoblast]
undifferentiated bipotential cells derived from the ventral foregut endoderm and the main component of the liver primordium (Duncan and Watt, 2001; Gualdi et al, 1996; Houssaint, 1980; Jung et al, 1999; Shiojiri, 1997; Zaret, 2000). The cells give rise to both mature hepatocytes in the liver parenchyma and cells that form the bile ducts in the periportal area (biliary epithelial cells, cholangiocytes) (Weiss et al, 2003). Differentiation of the two lineages from hepatoblasts requires a gradient of Activin A and TGF-beta (Clotman et al, 2002, 2005).
