The expression of this cellular protein is induced in cells harbouring human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) (Miura et al, 1991). The protein is known also as TXGP1 [tax-transcriptionally activated glycoprotein 1]. gp34 is a type 2 transmembrane protein that is produced relatively late during infection. Its synthesis is induced by, and depends on, the viral tax protein. The protein is a member of the TNF ligand superfamily of proteins.
Nakamura et al (1997) have reported that normal T-cell transiently express both gp34 and the receptor for gp34, OX40, upon antigenic stimulation.
Godfrey et al (1994) have cloned the same gene and identified gp34 as the human
