this term (Humble et al, 1956) denotes the presence of one cell inside another cell, a phenomenon usually referred to as cell-in-cell structure. The term is simply descriptive and neutral. Some publications state that the internalised cells is "undisturbed". There is no suggestion of how one cell managed to become internalised by another cells - a process usually referred to as cell-in-cell invasion - and what the fate of the engulfed cell is (for comparison see also: Pregnant cells).
