[Entamoeba histolytica cysteine proteinase-5] One of several cysteine proteinases encoded in the genome of the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. This parasite causes intestinal inflammation and ulceration. ehcp5 and other pathogen-encoded cysteine proteases have been shown to be important virulence factors.
The enzyme possesses IL1-beta Convertase activity, which is thought to contribute to intestinal inflammation by activating human IL1-beta released by damaged intestinal cells (Zhang et al, 2000).
