[delta-like-3; Drosophila delta homolog 3; also: delta-like ligand-3] dll3 is a homolog of the Drosophila melanogaster delta gene, which is a ligand for Notch. The protein has been implicated in early pattern formation in the mouse embryo and complements the functions of other delta homologous proteins. The three major sites of expression implicate dll3 in somitogenesis and neurogenesis and in the production of tissue from the primitive streak and tailbud. The expression pattern of dll3 differs from that of dll1 but it is thought that the two genes cooperate in a sequential fashion (Dunwoodie et al, 1997).
