Delta
A gene (designated D1; CG3619) found in Drosophila melanogaster which encodes a 110 kDa transmembrane protein containing nine copies of an EGF-like repeat in its extracellular sequence. Delta and EGF, which is involved in the control of embryonic development, are considered homologous.
Delta protein interacts with another protein, designated Notch, and compensates the effects of certain lethal Notch mutations by downregulating its synthesis. The mechanism responsible for this regulatory effect is thought to involve direct protein-protein interactions with the EGF-like sequence elements found in both proteins.
