[CC domains, coiled-coil domain, coiled-coil protein, coiled-coil proteins]
abbr. CC domains. These domains are protein-protein interaction domains consisting of two or more alpha-helical domains twisting around each other to form a supercoil (Lupas and Gruber, 2005; for overview see also: Park, 2020)). The sequences of coiled-coils contain simple repetitive elements of seven primarily apolar residues (called heptads) with a periodicity of one heptad over two helical turns. Other periodicities and discontinuities exist (Gruber and Lupas, 2003; Yu, 2002; Brown et al, 1996). These domains were discovered first in alpha-keratin (Crick, 1953) but they occur as structural elements in many other proteins. Newman et al (2000) have reported, for example, that 1 out of every 11 proteins contains a coiled-coil domain.
