[blood group antigen]
By definition, blood group antigens as used for blood group typing are antigenic determinants expressed on erythrocytes. For some blood group antigen terminology see also: Reid (2011), Storry et al (2011), Daniels et al (1996, 2004). The definition as a red cell antigen does not preclude expression of such antigens, however, on other cell types (for example, see: Rojewski et al, 2006; in case of identified proteins carrying such antigens expression information may be available also in COPE entries for selected cell types). The term antithetical blood group antigens refers to variants of a specific blood group antigen that are mutually exclusive.
